HIV/AIDS - CureCan HIV/AIDS be cured? No, there is no treatment for HIV and/or AIDS at the moment. However, the drugs used to treat the HIV related infections, often named highly active antiretroviral therapy, also called “the cocktail” because it is a blend of many drugs are very efficient. Many of these drugs have been used to treat cancer. However, because of their strength, their side effects might sometimes be more dangerous than the virus itself. Canada has approved several drugs such as AZT, 3TC, ddl and protease inhibitors, which are slowing the progression of the HIV in the body. However, they cannot eradicate the virus and cannot heal from AIDS. They are only contributing to the diminution of the amount of virus in blood while reinforcing the immune system; it will make you stay healthy longer. The treatment costs the health care system between 5,000 to 10,000 dollars per person yearly. The access to certain treatments is free in Canada. Research is continuing in this field and we hope that a treatment might one day lead to a cure. |
