HIV/AIDS

This workshop is part of our priorities because HIV/AIDS is a serious issue, not only in the African community living in Edmonton, but also among the recent immigrant population.

The program teaches the participants the basic knowledge about HIV/AIDS so they can help their people who are infected or affected by the AIDS virus in Alberta, but also to help those who have family having this disease in Africa. This course aims to create a strong team of instructors consisting of native Albertans and Afro-Albertans. This class is given each third and fourth Saturday of the month.

HIV/AIDS 101

This base course of 3 hours can be followed by 10 participants.

It is a requirement to all the other courses on HIV/AIDS and it gives the recent information on the disease. It covers the following subjects:

  • Introduction to AIDS/HIV
  • HIV transmission, prevention and treatment
  • Problems Reduction
  • Support to the infected people.

Train the Trainers

This course is given in two days. This workshop reinforces the “train the trainer” approach, developing leadership while allowing the participants to express their own ideas and give a presentation in their own culture and language. The objective of this course objective is to ensure:

  • an understanding in prevention
  • HIV transmission and treatments
  • knowledge on how to reduce its propagation.

HIV/AIDS and African women

African women are the most infected in the world. The formal and informal polygamy and poverty confronts women to high risks. Some values and beliefs represent a menace to the prevention and the fight against HIV/AIDS. The cultural approach is preferred as it awakens an interest and an understanding among the participants. This course covers:

  • Women’s attitude towards their cheating husbands and boyfriends
  • How to take back the power
  • The difficulties women are facing
  • Strategies to defeat cultures and protect ourselves
  • Course length: 3 hours

HIV/AIDS and African men
What makes men more vulnerable?

Everywhere in the world men seem to have more sexual partners than women. This makes them more at risk to be infected by HIV. This course is mandatory because it is an opportunity to talk about traditional sexual behaviours which put men at risk. The cultural approach is preferred to ensure a good understanding by the participants. The course covers:

  • The role and responsibilities of men in the propagation reduction and at the same time, of the VIH/AIDS menace
  • The traditional consequences as factors of the VIH/AIDS menace
  • Consequences of HIV/AIDS in their everyday life
  • The benefit of modifications
  • Course length: 3 hours

Health determinants - HIV/AIDS

The health determinants are the key factors known to be able to influence and act on population health. The course objectives are to understand the impact of diverse social, economic and physical factors on health and collective well-being. We want to make the participants aware of these determinants of HIV/AIDS and other STD (sexually transmitted disease). The course covers:

  • Women income and situation
  • Poverty and inequalities
  • Education
  • Access to health care
  • Individual Rights
  • Social/migration perturbations
  • Course length: 3 hours
